Welcome
to Bartley Temple United Methodist Church. Just as John Wesley and the early Methodists,
we too, place primary emphasis on “Christian living, on putting faith and love
into action.”
OUR BEGINNINGS
Bartley Temple United Methodist Church began with a small group of members having prayer meetings on Sunday afternoons. The first meetings were held at the home of Cornelia C. Edwards and occasionally at Carver Library on Northwest First Street. The group members were Lewis & Leola H. Cohen, Mr. Virgil Smith, Cornelia C. Edwards, Charles & Nettie Hurst and later came George Dexter, Thomas B. McPherson, Dr. Edward H. DeBose, Rev. Willie & Annie Murray, Edward Bradley, Joe Roberts, and Waymon & Barbara Jackson.
It was at one of the prayer meetings that the members decided to build a church. They began to raise money and contacted Rev. Henry Bartley Jr. who was the Methodist Conference treasurer to borrow money. On a small plot of land gifted to them from Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Stienburg. Bartley Temple United Methodist Church was built in late 1950 and named after Rev. Henry Bartley Jr. who not only helped them to get the money they needed to build, but he continued to assist them until the day their doors opened.
OUR AIM
Our first aim is to glorify God in worship; our second is to introduce people to Jesus Christ through evangelism; our third is to help persons of all ages to become deeply committed Christians through ministries of discipleship; our fourth is to build caring relationships and foster mutual ministry among the church family through authentic Christian fellowship; and finally, we aim to train, equip, inspire and mobilize members to live out their faith as salt and light outside the walls of the church through ministries of service.
